Data Design of ‘El Gordo de Navidad’

From lottery drum to radial graphic

Inspired by the iconic wooden drum of the Spanish Christmas Lottery, this visualization translates its circular motion and numbered balls into a radial grid that feels familiar at first glance. The structure echoes the ritual of the draw itself, using concentric rings and segments to evoke the moment when the children of San Ildefonso sing out the winning numbers.

Spotting winning patterns across years and numbers

By encoding each draw’s year and winning number on the same grid, the chart reveals clusters, gaps and outliers that are hard to see in tables of historical results. The clean aesthetic and soft color palette keep the focus on patterns of luck and repetition, inviting viewers to explore how chance behaves over more than two decades of draws.
